Launching the Campaign

Third generation Newton resident, local business owner, and community activist and volunteer Charlie Shapiro took the first step in launching a campaign for Alderman at Large – Ward 6 today.

With his son David, a senior at Newton South, by his side, Shapiro “pulled papers” at Newton City Hall, with the younger Shapiro signing the nomination papers first.

“I’m very excited to begin this effort,” said Shapiro. “I was very lucky to grow up in Newton and be able to take advantage of the opportunities our city provides, including great teachers and excellent schools. I believe the city is at a critical crossroads and a fresh, open minded, and well communicated approach to the way it serves its residents is needed now more than ever.”

Shapiro says his priorities are total transparency in government, ensuring success in our schools, smart growth initiatives to help enhance the local tax base, and helping to make housing more affordable for Newton’s seniors.

For the past seven months, Shapiro has been seen co-anchoring the Newton News at NewTV. As a candidate he will relinquish those volunteer duties, but will stay involved as a volunteer program producer. Shapiro was also recently elected by the membership to a two year position on the NewTV Board of Directors.

Shapiro is president of Massmedia, Inc., lives in Newton Centre with his wife Debra, son David and daughter Rebecca.
